On Campaign With the Army of the Potomac: The Civil War Journal of Theodore Ayrault Dodge
Published in Hardcover by Cooper Square Press (May, 2001)
Average review score:

A remarkably vivid memoir of military lifeAbly edited by Stephen Sears, On Campaign With The Army Of The Potomac: The Civil War Journal Of Theodore Ayrault Dodge is the compelling and informative memoir of Theodore Doge (1842-1909) who joined the Union Army at the age of 19 and kept a running "journal-type account" of wis battlefield experiences. He was a lieutenant colonel in the Army of the Potomac's 101st, and later transferred to the 199th New York infantry regiment. He saw action at the Seven Days' Battle, Second Bull Run, and Chancellorsville, ending his journal and fighting career on the bloody field of Gettysburg. He was wounded three times -- once slightly, once seriously, and then losing a leg. On Campaign With The Army Of The Potomac is a remarkably vivid memoir of military life that is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the growing library of Civil War studies.

Congratulations AnthonyCongratulations Anthony on your masterpiece. I love "A Place to Call Home." I am proud of you! I reccommend your book to anyone that enjoys thought provoking, candid, inspirational reading. You have done a fantastic job of articulating the drama and trauma we all experience in the journey of life. You know where you have been, where you are, and what it has taken to arrive there. Your anthology of poetry is wonderfully refreshing. You have made your dream a reality. You see the things others see and you hear the things others hear; yet they are afraid to speak, while you rise to the challenge. As an educator, I applaud you and your spirit; your poems are a literary work of genius. People and Oprah, take a look at A. S. Dodge's "A Place to Call Home."

The most informative, helpful book on selecting a preschool.I am so glade I found your book. It was so informative and a big help! I am the mother of a preschooler and I have interviewed over thirty in my area just to find the right one (still looking). With some of the things that I have witnessed on my vists I am constantly amazed that some of these schools have one child in their custody let alone thirty or more. Your book made me stronger to continue my search and not settle like other parents do. I know I will find the right school and your book will help me to do so.

Preserving the Dead: The Art and Science of Embalming
Published in Paperback by Lindsay Publications (September, 1997)
Average review score:

Very useful textbookThis was once the textbook of choice for the "Modern Embalmer of the 40's, 50's, 60's" and while a little outdated, is still a textbook that many of the master embalmers swear by. If you can find this book, and you're in the profession, you will immediately see it's worth. Lot's of old techniques that are still just as helpful today as they were 40 years ago. Truely a jewel of a find. Mark Alan Harman-Buseman

Pretzels By the Dozen
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 April, 2002)
Average review score:

Thoroughly enjoyable story and great illustrations.Written by Angela Elwell Hunt for young readers ages 4 to 8, Pretzels By The Dozen: Truth And Inspiration With A Heart Shaped Twist is a wonderfully presented Christian picturebook all about the history of pretzels. Among its many fascinating anecdotes is the origin of the pretzel - the first pretzel was shaped by a monk, and the pretzel's three holes symbolize the holy Trinity of God. Pretzels By The Dozen combines short stories about pretzels among American colonists, how pretzel bakers once saved Vienna from invasion, and more with an underlying theme about the importance of loving Jesus Christ. Enhanced with beautiful illustrations by Bill Dodge, Pretzels By The Dozen is a thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended book for young readers.

Psychology
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (June, 1999)
Average review score:

GREAT BookThis is a great book for those who are interested in trying to understand the breadth of Psychology. Although the book has tremedous breadth it goes into reasonable depth to give you a good background of the issues discussed. Moreover, it accomplishes this in an easy and enjoyable style of writing to read. I would definately recommend this book and feel confident it provides an excellent introductoty background to the field.

Rain on the River: New and Selected Poems and Short Prose
Published in Paperback by Grove Press (May, 2002)
Average review score:

A profound poetry collection...Too much is made of obscure, humorless poets with grad school vocabularies and a tenth grade idea of what passes for truth. Dodge isn't one of those academic pretenders. He's the real deal: a living, breathing poet reporting back from the edge where body and mind give way to the world. My only complaint is that his poems aren't as outright funny as his wonderful novels. Fans of the poetry of Gary Snyder, Jim Harrison and the Beats should find much of value in this fine collection. Everyone else should, too.

The Ransom of Russian Art
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (December, 1994)
Average review score:

Buff writing about emotion and tragedyAn eccentric American professor of economics, Norton Dodge, travels throughout the Soviet Union during the 1960s and '70s and into the '80s. He spends several million dollars on dissident art, smuggling it out of the country, in deep violation of Soviet law but not the US's. John McPhee reports on the story, after the fact, and includes vivid descriptions of the artists and their relationships with one another, Dodge and the Soviet state. The Soviet state, of course, is the hulking force behind the story, responsible for making the artists dissidents and causing various among them, from time to time, to disappear or die. So McPhee asks Dodge how he managed to assemble the collection. Was Dodge a representative of the KGB? the CIA? McPhee defers to Dodge's explanations, but McPhee's recounting of his conversation with Dodge about CIA involvement in the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies may engender in the imagination of some readers a hint of the suspicion and paranoia that suffused the culture that originally created the art. About Norton Dodge and his collection (now housed at Rutgers University), the poet Konstantin Kuzminsky says, "Norton thinks art is international. I insist it's purely national." "Americans are afraid of everything which causes too much emotion and tragedy. That is the problem between East and West." Which suggests the gulfs in passion and experience separating this story of Russian art from the trig completeness suggested by McPhee's prose.

Reaching children in war : Sudan, Uganda, and Mozambique
Published in Unknown Binding by Sigma Forlag ; Scandinavian Institute of African Studies ()
Average review score:

Their work is explicit to the needs of a whole continent!Cole P. Dodge lent a positive about-face to the reputation of UNICEF, especially in East Africa, during the uneasy decade of the 80s. There is quite possibly no other healthcare/development leader that has achieved so much in the name of an entire continent--Africa. All of his books should be atop the must-read list of Governmental and Non-Governmental healthcare agency professionals alike. Raundelen has taken a keen interest in child psychology issues, to include the impact of war and violence upon children, among the most at-risk to war, and child soldiers. This Norwegian is a leading expert in the field.
